Today I came across Hope Velocette's design of the Wilder Restaurant in Philadelphia. Immediately, I was drawn to her whimsical lines and rich colors, yet simultaneously I was also struck with a sense of familiarity.

In my mindseye an image arose: a little child peeking from beneath a tapestry of rich tassels and pheasants.

The image I saw emanating from Hope’s work is a painting by the prolific artist, Andrey Remnev. Not only was it this single painting that her work brought to life, but his entire sense of color, line, contrast, and composition.

You can see this clearly displayed in another piece by Remnev, "Roman Holiday." Here there is a strikingly similar gorgeous mix of royal blues, reds, oranges, and golds in an array of sweeping color blocks. In the last picture "Habitat," I feel a similar rhythm and elegance of line. All of these pieces combined create a sumptuous palette and composition that pairs perfectly with the Wilder Restaurant.

I am, hands down, a sucker for design that takes you outside of the ordinary. Something that merges the fantastical mind of our childhood selves, with the romanticism and art of human ability.

My favorite facet of design is that it shows us life can be lived splendidly. That we can be enveloped in a space that extends the finest versions of our internal worlds and that beauty can be inhabited, lounged upon, and felt – every single day.

Art and design are inextricable, especially at this level of creativity. No matter what I am designing, art is always on my mind, and so too was it clearly on the mind of Hope Velocette.
